The Story
Hi, I'm Kevin. I'm the owner of
WebCycleryâ?¢. My passion for cycling began in 1991,
after a college roommate got me to buy my first mountain bike.
It was a Specialized Rockhopper Comp, Battleship Gray. I beat
the hell out of that thing for a year or so, and when it was
time to buy a new bike, I decided to get a job at a bike shop
so I could save some $$$$.
I worked at Aero Schwinn in Boca Raton, Florida for a couple of years. Then I put myself through school working at Tec's Pro Shop in Tallahassee, Florida (If you ever see Tec, tell him I say 'Hi'). I was the service manager until I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in French (ce qui m'aide beaucoup - not). I spent a couple of summers studying in Paris, which was really exciting for me because I got to see a lot of the Tour.
With a diploma in my back pocket, I loaded a rental car
with all my bikes and my faithful dog, Jeff (R.I.P.), and ended
up in beautiful Bend, Oregon. It's a small town of about 50,000
avid outdoor enthusiasts. We're right on the edge of the High
Desert and the Cascade Mountains, so we've got plenty to do for
just about everyone. We've got great mountain biking, road
riding, paddling, climbing, skiing and snowboarding, etc.,
etc., etc. The place rocks! And unlike the rest of the Pacific
Northwest, it doesn't rain all the time. Since we're on the
edge of a desert, it's really dry and sunny. One of the only
downsides to living in Bend is that everyone seems to be super
fit. There are a ton of pro and former pro athletes that call
Bend home, so it really puts people like me in their place.
Within a year of moving, WebCyclery was born. I was tired of seeing how the traditional mail order companies treated customers (and I heard plenty of complaints), and I decided that I could do it better by using the Internet. I couldn't really compete with the big boys on price (they sell some stuff cheaper than I can buy it), so I decided to specialize on the niches, hard to find stuff, and to offer the best damn customer service available, and I think we do a pretty good job of it. We also try to provide you with all the information that you need to make an informed decision. We only sell stuff that we like. Do we ride it all? Hell no, but we also don't have an endless supply of cash. I don't even have the room to keep the 7 bikes that I own.
