FOUR YEARS! IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT FOUR
YEARS have already come and gone since we
published our first issue of BEND LIVING.
From cowboys to bikers and firefighters to rollerdolls,
we’ve covered them all and many more in between. In
this issue, our 18th, we continue to bring you the people,
places and events shaping the Central Oregon community. People like the local veterans featured in “The War After the War,” (page 108) who are still fighting for medical benefi ts, basic needs and, in some cases, social acceptance, decades after returning home from battle. Places like the 71 parks that make up the Bend Metro Parks & Recreation District. This award-winning organization has helped thousands of people enjoy and embrace the Central Oregon lifestyle. In our feature article “Recreation’s Inspiration,” (page 142) we introduce you to the parks, as well as the staff and volunteers who helped Parks and Rec earn a gold medal award from the National Recreation and Park Association. Events like the Jeld-Wen Tradition Golf Tournament (page 118). Some of the greatest professionals ever to play the game will tee off at Crosswater golf course in Sunriver, the host of the tournament and the only Northwest stop on the PGA Champions Tour. BEND LIVING’s tradition of showcasing the very best the region has to offer continues in our annual Best of Bend ratings. More than 600 of you voted online, and the results may surprise you. From where to dine, to where to shop and the best places to recreate, we left no stone unturned. I have had the privilege of being part of the BEND LIVING team from the beginning. And today, more than ever, I am thankful for the many talented, creative and energetic people who have helped shape the magazine into the publication you see today. I am also grateful to you, the readers, advertisers and supporters of BEND LIVING. Thank you for a great four years—the next four will be even better. All the best, Erik Franks, publisher BEND LIVING |
